MSR WindBurner Stove.

MSR WindBurner Stove.

The MSR WindBurner™ stove (formerly the WindBoiler) is a fast, fuel-efficient personal stove system from Mountain Safety Research® that has won numerous industry awards.

The WindBurner™ combines the award-winning Reactor® technology with the features solo travellers need most.

The all-in-one system nests inside its pot for easy packing and assembly, leaving more time for you to enjoy your adventure.

Reactor Technology

Its radiant burner and enclosed, windproof design allow the stove to boil water fast and operate in weather that leaves conventional burners in the cold. Faster boil times mean less fuel consumption, and less weight for you to carry.

Radiant Burner Technology

Boil Times

The WindBurner manages to boil half a litre of water a full minute faster than the competition in a breeze. In a wind of 12mph, it boils in a mere 2:45 minutes, while the competition fails to boil at all.

Real World Usage

Owning and using this stove has been a pleasure and MSR have put a lot of thought into the details. It is a little heavier than some of its rivals, but its benefits more than make up for this.

The optional extras that are available are also a plus, especially the coffee press — nothing quite like a fresh brewed coffee to start your adventure.

The hanging kit is also a great addition if you’re a climber, being able to easily and safely make a warm drink or food on a hanging belay is a breath of fresh air.

Cons

There really is only one thing that I can think of when it comes to downsides and that is versatility.

The stove is fantastic at boiling water and cooking packet meals like noodles, but you’d struggle with much else.

The way the stove is made means using other pans is a no-go, the stove features a cut off switch for safety, this trips if the stove overheats, preventing damage to you, or the stove.

The pot system that comes with the stove features a vented bottom that allows the heat to escape, preventing the safety shut off.

As soon as you put a regular pot or pan on the stove, the heat can no longer escape, thus tripping the safety mechanism.

MSR have thought of this, though it will cost you a little more money. They have created the WindBurner Skillet™ to compliment the stove.

This skillet features the vented bottom like the pot, which opens up much more versatility in what you can cook.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a top notch piece of kit and I really couldn’t see myself being without one. I also can’t wait to get my hands on the skillet to open up the cooking possibilites.
